Lab2Market Journey Officially Begins: Building the Foundation for Research Commercialisation in Indonesia
Updated: Jul 16

The Journey Begins
Turning research into real-world impact requires more than scientific excellence. It also requires an understanding of markets, customers, partnerships, investment, and the pathways that enable innovation to reach society.
This vision marked the beginning of the Lab2Market programme as 15 selected research teams from universities across Indonesia gathered for the Lab2Market Kick-Off Days.
Initiated by the British Embassy Jakarta through the UK-Indonesia Tech Hub and implemented by Endeavor Indonesia, Lab2Market is designed to support research teams in translating validated innovations into market-ready solutions.
Over two days, participants took their first step toward commercialisation through workshops, expert mentorship, industry exposure, and ecosystem engagement.
15 Research Teams Embark on the Lab2Market Journey
The selected cohort represents a diverse range of research innovations spanning Advanced Materials, Artificial Intelligence (AI), ClimateTech, and HealthTech. Although each team addresses different challenges, they share a common objective: transforming research into solutions that create tangible economic and societal impact.
The Kick-Off served as an opportunity for participants to connect with fellow researchers, exchange perspectives, and begin building a community of innovators navigating similar commercialisation journeys.
Building Commercialisation Capabilities
Research excellence alone is rarely enough to achieve successful commercialisation. Through LaunchLab Academy, participants explored the practical foundations required to move innovations beyond the laboratory.
Participants learned directly from entrepreneurs, investors, and industry leaders with extensive experience in innovation, venture building, and commercialisation, including:
Jonathan Davy, CEO & Co-Founder of Ecoxyztem, shared practical insights on Product-Market Fit and Go-to-Market Strategy for research-based innovations.
Agus Wismoyo, Chief Human Capital Officer of Siloam Hospitals, delivered a session on Designing High-Performance Organisations: From Expert to Leader, encouraging researchers to think beyond technology and build organisations capable of long-term growth.
Rendy Nasa, Partner at Bavana Ventures, introduced participants to business model development, pricing strategy, and the commercial considerations that investors look for in early-stage innovation.
Insights from Industry
As part of the Kick-Off, participants visited Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village to gain first-hand exposure to how innovation is evaluated, adopted, and implemented within one of Indonesia's leading healthcare institutions.
The visit provided a practical perspective on the realities of commercialisation, highlighting that successful innovation depends not only on technological performance but also on regulatory readiness, operational integration, stakeholder adoption, and long-term value creation.
For many participants, the session reinforced the importance of understanding industry needs early in the commercialisation journey.
Refining Ideas Through Expert Mentorship
Beyond classroom learning, participants joined LaunchLab Clinic, where they discussed their innovations in small-group mentoring sessions with experienced founders, investors, corporate leaders, and commercialisation practitioners.
The mentoring sessions featured:
Norman Sasono, Chief Technology Officer of DANA Indonesia
Agus Wismoyo, Chief Human Capital Officer of Siloam Hospitals
Dharmawan Widjaja, Director of PT Dharma Polimetal Tbk
Agung Bezharie, Partner at Antler
These conversations encouraged participants to think beyond research outputs and begin developing commercially viable pathways for their innovations while drawing on the practical experience of leaders from Indonesia's technology, investment, healthcare, and manufacturing ecosystems.
What's Next for the Lab2Market Cohort
The Kick-Off marks only the beginning of the Lab2Market journey.
Over the coming months, participants will continue strengthening their commercialisation readiness through LaunchLab Academy, LaunchLab Clinic, industry engagement, investor and business matching, and the QuickStart Demo & Forum.
Along the way, they will validate market opportunities, refine their commercial strategies, build strategic partnerships, and explore pathways for research adoption beyond the university.
Ultimately, Lab2Market seeks to help research teams move beyond publications and prototypes—toward innovations that create lasting value for industry, society, and Indonesia's growing innovation ecosystem.
